Anyone who's done a long ride in the Top End build-up season knows the feeling. An hour in, the legs go heavy, and by the turnaround you're running on fumes. A lot of the time that's not fitness. It's fuel.

That's why we're bringing Maurten to Blue Cycles, through Enso Sports, the Australian distributor. Pre-orders are open now online: Shop Maurten pre-orders

What is Maurten?

Maurten makes sports fuel based on what it calls Hydrogel Technology. Its gels encapsulate carbohydrates in a natural hydrogel, and its drink mixes turn into a hydrogel in the stomach. Maurten says this carries the carbs through the stomach so they're easy on the gut. The gels have just six ingredients, with no added colours, preservatives or flavours.

The starter range

  • Gel 100: 25g carbohydrates per sachet
  • Gel 100 CAF 100: 25g carbohydrates and 100mg caffeine (about 1.5 espressos, says Maurten)
  • Gel 160: 40g carbohydrates
  • Drink Mix 160: 40g carbohydrates per serve
  • Drink Mix 320: 80g carbohydrates per 500ml
  • Drink Mix 320 CAF 100: 80g carbohydrates and 100mg caffeine per 500ml
  • Solid 160: an oat and rice bar with 40g carbohydrates that snaps into two 20g halves

The numbers in the names are calories per serve, so the maths is easy. Boxes are online. Once stock lands, singles will be available at the counter.

How much should you eat?

For road rides of 2–6 hours, Maurten's fuel guide says to aim for 60–90g of carbohydrates per hour, for example 1 Drink Mix 160 + 1 Gel 100 = 65g, or 1 Drink Mix 320 CAF 100 = 80g. For shorter or easier rides you'll need less. Maurten's general range is 30–90g/hr, depending on duration, intensity and what your gut tolerates. In the wet season heat, start fuelling early, practise on training rides and don't forget your fluids.
