Garmin has announced the Edge 1060, the replacement for the Edge 1050. The big change is voice: a built-in microphone lets you control it hands-free. It's also 19 g lighter and smaller than the 1050, with the same 3.5" screen and battery life. RRP is $1,299, and you can pre-order it now at Blue Cycles Darwin for arrival from 17 November.

1. Hands-free voice control

Say "Okay, Garmin" and ask for things like your heart rate, a route to the nearest coffee shop, or to report a pothole. The Edge reads out stats, changes screens and suggests routes while your hands stay on the bars.
With a connected phone and the Garmin Messenger app, you can send voice messages and hear replies through the built-in speaker. Voice control works in select languages, and Garmin notes performance can vary with riding conditions.
2. New navigation tools
- Route Options: compare routes to a destination by ride time, elevation and bike type.
- Route Previews: see distance, estimated ride time, traffic and reported hazards before you start.
- Up Ahead: pick the points of interest you care about, such as coffee or toilets, and see the nearest ones on your route.
- Free Flow Routing: find routes with the fewest stops and intersections, handy for training efforts.
- Road closure alerts: reported by other Garmin cyclists, alongside existing hazard reports (needs a paired phone and Garmin Connect).
3. Training and group riding
Real-time stamina, power guide, cycling ability and course demands carry over, along with free Garmin Cycling Coach plans and TrainingPeaks workout sync. New on the 1060: an interactive workout screen, a customisable home screen, and GroupRide detection, which offers to join a nearby GroupRide session from your phone.
It can also reverse charge a Varia light, phone or other device over USB-C. Garmin says this isn't intended for use while riding.

5. Who it suits
- Riders upgrading from an older Edge who want the latest navigation and training tools in one unit.
- Training riders who want stats read out mid-effort without taking a hand off the bars.
- Bunch and group riders who'll use GroupRide messaging and voice messages.
- Road, gravel and trail riders exploring new routes, thanks to route options and hazard alerts.
Already on an Edge 1050? Screen, battery and storage are unchanged, so the upgrade comes down to voice control, the new routing tools and the lighter unit.
