What Size Kids Bike Does My Child Need? A Parent's Guide

Buying your child's first bike — or their next one — can be confusing. Walk into any bike shop and you'll see a wall of different wheel sizes, and it's not always obvious which one is right. Here's a simple guide to help Darwin parents get it right the first time.

Start with height, not age

Every child develops differently — a confident 5 year old might be ready for a 20" while another child the same age is still happy on a 16". Wheel size should be based on height and ability, not age. Use this as a starting point:

  • Balance bike — under 85cm
  • 12" — 80–95cm
  • 16" — 100–115cm
  • 20" — 110–130cm
  • 24" — 125–140cm
  • 26" — 135cm+

These are a guide only. The best way to get it right is to come in and try the bike — bring your child in and we'll find the perfect fit on the spot. We're open 7 days in Coconut Grove.

Balance bikes first

If your child isn't yet ready for pedals, skip the training wheels and go straight to a balance bike. Kids learn to balance and steer naturally, then transition to a pedal bike much faster. The Cruzee balance bike is one of the lightest on the market — at just 1.9kg your child won't be wrestling with it.

What to look for in Darwin

Darwin's riding conditions are pretty ideal for kids — flat streets, sealed bike paths and dry season weather that's perfect for getting outside. A few things worth considering locally:

  • Lightweight frames — Darwin is hot. A heavy bike is harder to ride and less fun. Look for alloy frames over steel.
  • Easy brakes — smaller hands need levers they can actually squeeze. Check the brake reach before you buy.
  • Puncture resistance — bike paths around Coconut Grove and Nightcliff can have thorns and debris, adding sealant is worth it.

At Blue Cycles Darwin we stock kids bikes from balance bike age all the way through to 26" — brands include Sunpeed, Cruzee, Avanti and GT, starting from $270.

Every bike is assembled and checked by our mechanics before it leaves the shop. We're open 7 days in Coconut Grove, so bring the kids in and we'll find the right fit on the spot.
